Heirloom Yellow Pear Tomato Seeds for 50+
Yellow Pear Tomato Seeds, Heirloom NON-GMO, Low Acid, Indeterminate, Open-Pollinated, Sweet, Super Delicious, 75 days. These pear/teardrop shaped tomatoes typically weigh about 3/4-1 oz. and measure 1-1.5" in size. They have a nice, rich, cherry-tomato flavor, making them delicious in salads or when pickled. The plants are low acid and indeterminate, bearing heavily.
When growing these tomatoes, once a few true leaves have developed, seedlings should be slowly moved outside (if sprouted indoors) to ambient light. Care must be taken not to expose the seedlings to direct, scorching sun, so plants may need to be hardened off via gradual sun exposure. Hardening off can be done using a shaded or filtered light location, as well as protection from strong winds, rain or low humidity. This process typically takes 5-10 days.
The ideal soil temperature for germination is 70-75°F. Seeds should be planted at a depth of 1/4". It is recommended to sprout the tomato seeds in small 4" or smaller containers, using a well-drained standard potting mix. In-ground germination is not advised.
Seeds should be started in containers approximately 8 weeks prior to the planned set-out date. Plants should then be transplanted to the garden 1-2 weeks after the expected date of last frost. Soil should be kept consistently warm, between 70-85°F. Cool soils, below about 60-65°F, even just at night, will significantly delay or inhibit germination. Conversely, soils above 90°F can also inhibit germination and provide ideal conditions for seed rot.
Overwatering can cause fungal growth, leading to seed rot. Excess water can also bury seeds deep in the soil, preventing them from breaking the surface. It is best to water when the soil surface just begins to dry. Multiple seeds can be planted in a single starter container, but should be thinned once seedlings appear, leaving only a single plant. Seeds do not require light for germination, but a light source should be provided for seedlings once they emerge from the soil.
The ideal planting spacing for these tomatoes is 24". They are hardy in USDA Zones 4-10 and require full sun. Under optimal conditions, the seeds will germinate in 7-14 days, with a germination rate of 95%.
