Planting Depth and Containers: Plant the seeds to a depth of 1/4 inch in a small container, ideally 4 inches or less. Container planting is preferred over in-ground germination to ensure better control over soil moisture and temperature.
Starting Seeds: Start your seeds in containers approximately 8 weeks before you plan to set out the seedlings. Transplant the seedlings to your garden 1-2 weeks after the last expected frost. Ensure the soil remains consistently warm, ideally between 70-85°F.
Avoid Overwatering: Overwatering can lead to fungal growth and seed rot. Water the soil only when the surface begins to dry. Excess water can bury the seeds too deep, preventing them from breaking through the surface.
Seed Thinning and Lighting: Multiple seeds can be planted in one starter container, but once seedlings appear, thin them so only one plant remains. After the seeds have germinated, provide a light source for the seedlings to ensure healthy growth.
